Inter-Sectoral Economic Linkages in the Mining Industries of Botswana and Tanzania: Analysis Using Partial Hypothetical Extraction Method

Fiscal and local content policies aimed at promoting linkages between mining other economic sectors have been informed by theories built on historical observations dating back to the 1950s. This paper contends that there is a need rethink about mining-based prospects for structural change based an improved understanding of existing potential inter-sectoral linkages. Using input–output tables Tanzania Botswana, we apply Partial Hypothetical Extraction Method within Leontief Gosh frameworks examine quarrying sector these two economies. We find that, possible linkage pathways lie in scaling-up coal, soda ash salt investing glass, polymer, chemicals manufacturing. For Tanzania, opportunities with manufacturing non-metallic construction materials as well metallic minerals natural gas. both countries, transforming their economies away from heavy reliance mineral extraction hinges leveraging extractives infrastructure, innovative technology, technical skills, capturing business opportunities, knowledge, financial returns invest more diversified activities.
